History of
The Runner's Delight
Alan Steggles provided
the inspiration for a new quilt design. The Runner’s Delight,
a king size quilt, allowed him to include t-shirts from his 50
states plus DC marathons. This quilt is now a reminder of his
hard work and accomplishments and is proudly displayed in Alan’s
home for his friends to see. “It reminds me that I have
done something I would have never imagined me doing. If someone
had said 20 years ago I would run a marathon I would have laughed
out loud, but now that I look at it I realized that I have surpassed
anything I could have dreamed about.”
Alan has run over 214
marathons and has never repeated a marathon course. He is a retired
biochemist and spends his days playing bridge, cooking, reading,
playing video games, and going to the gym. Alan started running
marathons in 1993 because “it seemed like a good idea at
the time.” He met members of the 50 States Club at his second
marathon and was intrigued by the idea of seeing the country.
Little did he know he would soon suffer from a mild case of OCD
like most other 50 state runners, as he is now on his third time
around. His PR came in 1994 at the Cleveland Revco Marathon with
a time of 4.23, but those days are “long, long gone!”
His favorite marathon to date was Medoc in France where there
are 19 wine stations in addition to water stops throughout the
course. With all of the marathons under his belt and over 200
t-shirts, Alan decided to do something about his over-flowing
closet. He had always appreciated quilts as an art form and when
he saw Keepsake Theme Quilts displayed in a booth at the Cleveland
Marathon he contacted them for more information.
